Description

Iris
The stone for this sculpture was sourced from Tout Quarry, Portland in 2019. The piece was started in January 2020 and finished during Lockdown. I took a while to find the form within the stone initially, which invariably happens with my work. Once I could see her the process began to flow, which I feel is evident within the form.

Iris, in Greek mythology, was the goddess of the rainbow and messenger to the queen of the gods Hera. To me represents flow, feeling and balance. In myth she represents communication, messages and the link between heaven and earth. Her wings were said to light up even the darkest of caverns.

Iris – The Messenger has been finished and sealed to allow the tactile qualities of the sculpture to be explored without damaging the natural patina of the stone.
