About Studio Ayles
Studio Ayles is the culmination of over 20 years exploration into utilising natural materials to find unique forms hidden within. The maker H.A. Ayles, is sustainably sourcing only natural materials that are sculpted and formed into objects that will enhance the space they inhabit with elemental energy and individual beauty.
Howard has been working with wood since 2000, whilst developing a hobby in Bushcraft. He found himself whittling spoons and other functional pieces of green wood while enjoying the evenings campfire. This steadily turned into more sculptural forms. The transition to wood-lathe combined with stone and marble sculpture keeps the studio, nestled within the South Downs National Park, a hive of activity.

Ancient Tree-lore and mythology has always fascinated me since my early childhood. How different trees have a different feeling and space within the woodland environment. How the trees energy is transferred into the internal space within the home, and what effect it has on its new surroundings. These myths and lore are still integral to our customs and traditions all over the planet, and is still evolving to this day.
The stone has been a relatively new journey since 2013. It started in Portland, Dorset- over a bank holiday weekend and hasn’t stopped since. Working with Hannah and Paul at the Portland Stone and Quarry Trust, gave me the confidence to explore this new medium of expression. The more I immerse myself within Portland Stone, the more it captivates my imagination. You can feel the energy of the stone resonating while you are working the material. PSQT has established a centre for discovery & learning that brings together people from different backgrounds through the exchange of skills & knowledge, as a model for regenerating the quarry environment.
